RETAIL CRIME IN THE UK >>
UK FIGURES FOR 2008


UK retail shrinkage fell by 3% to 1.30%, against much of the trend in the rest of Europe. Last year's shrinkage was 1.34% and as high as 1.77% in 2002.

'Shrinkage' measures stockloss caused by crime, waste and error.

The Costs of Crime: These were the overall 2008 crime costs of UK retailers:

Customer theft £1595 M
Employee theft £1273 M
Supplier fraud £209 M
Card fraud £73 M
Robbery/burglary £39 M
Error and waste £666 M

Security and loss prevention


£785 M

The total UK costs of retail crime consist of the losses from thefts by customers, staff and suppliers, and the costs of security.
