RETAIL CRIME IN THE UK >>
UK FIGURES FOR 2009


UK retail shrinkage rose from 1.30% to 1.37% in 2009, along with the rest of the world. Even so this was a reduction from 1.77% in 2002.

'Shrinkage' measures stockloss caused by crime, waste and error.

The Costs of Crime: These were the overall 2009 crime costs of UK retailers:

Customer theft £1767 M
Employee theft £1479 M
Supplier fraud £175 M
Card fraud £93 M
Robbery/burglary £45 M
Error and waste £642 M

Security and loss prevention


£771 M

The total UK costs of retail crime consist of the losses from thefts by customers, staff and suppliers, and the costs of security.
